Nick Price, Ben Crenshaw and Colin Montgomerie Add Further Luster to Greater Gwinnett Championship Field
(GWINNETT - METRO ATLANTA) -
What World Golf Hall of Famers Nick Price, Ben Crenshaw and Colin Montgomerie have committed to play in the 2nd annual Greater Gwinnett Championship Presented by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating, an Official Event on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour. The tournament will be played April 14-20 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, GA. In addition to these three stars, 78 other legends of golf will be competing for a $1.8 million purse including the defending champion Bernhard Langer, Kenny Perry, Tom Kite and Mark O’Meara.
Who
A native of Zimbabwe and long time resident of Florida, Price won three major championships including the PGA Championships in 1992 and 1994 and the Open Championship in 1992. He topped the PGA TOUR money list in both 1993 and 1994, setting a new earnings record each time, and spent 43 weeks at the number one position in the Official World Golf Rankings. Long regarded as one of the truly nice guys in the game, he was voted the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the USGA in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. He also received the 2011 Old Tom Morris Award, given by the GCSAA to an individual who "through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf has helped to mold the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris." He won his first Champions Tour event at the 2009 Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am where he had three double bogeys in his final round but hung on to win by one stroke over Larry Nelson.
Next week Crenshaw will be preparing for the Greater Gwinnett Championship by playing in The Masters in Augusta for the 43rd time. He captured the coveted green jacket in both 1984 and 1995 and needs nine more appearances to equal Gary Player’s astonishing record of 52. Those two titles were among his 19 victories on the PGA TOUR. Four of those wins came in his native Texas including the San Antonio Texas Open which was his first event as a professional. Ben played on four Ryder Cup teams and captained the 1999 team which roared back from a 10-6 deficit on the final day to capture the Cup. Nowadays he devotes the majority his time to course design with architecture partner Bill Coore. Together they have gained a reputation as one of the greatest design teams in America.
Montgomerie made his Champions Tour last June at the Constellation Senior Players Championship where he tied for 9th, just weeks after being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. For nearly three decades he was a dominant force on the European PGA Tour, capturing 31 victories as well as a record eight European Tour Order of Merit wins symbolic of the money title. Seven of those came in succession from 1993 to 1999. “Monte” is widely regarded as one of the greatest Ryder Cup players in history, compiling a record of 20-9-7 which ranks second all-time in total points behind only Nick Faldo. He never lost in eight singles matches. He also captained the winning European side in 2010 at Celtic Manor in Wales.
